Amateur Radio has been my hobby since I was in the 7th grade. That was back in 1975. I signed up for an "elective" class called "Electronics". The teacher was Howard Russell - N7BN (now a Silent Key). The classroom was filled with surplus milatary recievers and transmitters, and a Ten-Tec C.W. transmitter. On the first of day class, Mr. Russell demonstrated a C.W. (Morse Code) QSO for us, and afterwards, informed the entire class that we had the chance to get our "Ham" tickets, and that he would help anyone who was interested. From that point on, I was hooked and simply fascinated with this magic called "Ham Radio"..!!!
The Adventure Begins
Those of us that wanted our tickets, learned how to send and receive Morse Code. We also studied basic radio theory and the F.C.C. rules. It was all part of getting ready to take the F.C.C. test for the Novice class license. At that time, you had to pass a 5 wpm morse code test, and score 70% or better on the 20 question written exam. I flunked the written exam the first time, and barely scraped by on my second try. Three weeks later, I had my Novice license and my assigned call sign was WN7AWL.
In the early 1980's, I upgraded to General Class, thanks to the study guides published by Dick Bash - KL7IHP. You can use Google to find out he is. Suffice it to say that his exam guides changed the face of Amater Radio testing, and helped move us to the system we have today.
In the early 2000's...I upgraded to Extra Class.
Throughout the years, I've been involved in the different aspects of Ham Radio. The hobby offers many different areas of interest. There's something for everyone. My interests are (or have been):
- Antenna Building
- Repeater Building
- Packet Radio (Includes running a Packet BBS)
- HF comms using SSB, Packet, PSK31 (Sometimes 1500 watts PEP, sometimes QRP)
- VHF/UHF comms using FM, SSB, Packet (Inlcuding Space Shuttle and ISS contacts)
- Mobile HF
- Digital Mobile Radio (DMR)
- Emergency Communications
- Field Day (Any Mode Available..!!!)
Welcome to my website and enjoy your visit. Updates will be posted when time permits.
